What to Expect After Your NHDT Hair Transplant —
Month by Month

By Dr Viral Desai  |  Founder, NHDT India  |  April 2026  |  6 min read

One of the most important things I tell every NHDT patient before their procedure is this: hair transplant results do not happen overnight. The journey from procedure day to your final result is a 12-month process — and understanding each stage makes that journey far less anxious and far more exciting.

Many patients who do not know what to expect panic when they see shedding in week 3 or feel impatient at month 4 when growth seems slow. This guide walks you through exactly what is happening at every stage — biologically, visually, and practically — so you are never caught off guard.

The most important thing to remember: every stage described below is normal and expected. Shedding is not failure. Slow early growth is not a bad sign. Trust the process — your final result at month 12 will reflect the full density and naturalness that NHDT is known for.

Your NHDT Recovery and Growth Timeline

Day 1–3
Normal

Immediately After the Procedure

The scalp will have mild redness and tiny scabs forming around each implanted follicle. There may be minor swelling around the forehead and temples — this is completely normal and resolves within 2–3 days. Most NHDT patients experience very little pain due to the near-zero trauma technique. You will be given post-care instructions and a gentle saline spray to keep the grafts moist.

  • Sleep with head elevated at 45 degrees to reduce swelling
  • Do not touch, scratch, or rub the recipient area
  • Use the saline spray as instructed — every 2 hours in the first 48 hours
  • Avoid direct sun exposure on the scalp
Week 1–2
Normal

Scab Formation and Early Healing

Small scabs form around each graft site and begin to naturally fall off by days 7–10. Do not pick or forcibly remove them — they will shed on their own with gentle washing. By the end of week 2, most scabs are gone, redness has significantly reduced, and the scalp looks close to normal. The transplanted hairs are still in place at this point and may appear to be growing — this is the original hair shaft, not new growth yet.

  • Begin gentle washing with a mild shampoo from day 3 onwards as advised
  • Pat dry — do not rub the scalp with a towel
  • Avoid swimming, gyms, and strenuous exercise for 2 weeks
  • You can return to desk work and normal daily activity from day 3–5
Week 2–4
Expected — Do Not Panic

Shedding Phase (Shock Loss)

This is the stage that surprises most patients — and the one I want to prepare you for most carefully. Between weeks 2 and 4, the transplanted hairs will begin to shed. This is called shock loss or effluvium, and it is completely normal and expected. The hair shaft sheds, but the follicle root remains alive and anchored in the scalp. The follicle then enters a resting phase before beginning new growth. Think of it as the follicle resetting itself in its new location.

  • Do not be alarmed by shedding — it is a sign the follicles are cycling normally
  • Continue your normal washing and care routine
  • Avoid any chemical treatments, colours, or harsh products on the scalp
Month 2–3
Resting Phase

The Quiet Period

Months 2 and 3 are often the most psychologically challenging phase. The shed hairs are gone and new growth has not yet started visibly. The scalp may look similar to before the procedure. This is completely normal — the follicles are in their resting (telogen) phase underground, preparing to enter active growth. Some patients begin to see very fine, thin new hairs emerging by the end of month 3. These early hairs are wispy and soft — they will thicken significantly over the coming months.

Month 4–5
Growth Begins

Early Visible Growth

By month 4, new hair growth becomes clearly visible. The hairs are still thin and may appear slightly curly or wavy at first — this normalises as they mature. You will begin to see coverage in the transplanted areas and a visible improvement in density. This is the stage where most patients start to feel genuinely excited about their results. Continue to avoid any chemical treatments that could damage the new fragile hairs.

Month 6
Significant Progress

Halfway to Your Final Result

Month 6 is a major milestone. By this point, approximately 50–60% of your final density is visible. The hairline is taking clear shape, the transplanted area shows solid coverage, and most patients begin feeling comfortable wearing their hair without styling to conceal anything. The hairs are now thicker and more pigmented than the early growth phase. This is a good time for your follow-up appointment so I can assess your progress and advise on any care adjustments.

Month 8–9
Maturing

Density and Texture Maturing

The transplanted hairs continue to thicken and mature. By month 8–9, around 70–80% of your final density is present. The texture of the hair normalises — the early waviness resolves and the hair begins to behave like your natural hair. You can now begin to style, cut, and treat your hair normally. Many patients at this stage receive comments on how much better their hair looks without anyone knowing they had a procedure.

Month 12
Final Result

Your Full NHDT Result

Month 12 is when your final NHDT result is fully visible. 100% of the transplanted follicles have completed their growth cycle, reached full thickness, and integrated completely with your natural hair. The hairline looks natural, the density is high, and the result is permanent. These follicles are genetically resistant to balding — they will continue to grow for the rest of your life. This is the result you will carry forward indefinitely.

  • Final follow-up appointment with Dr Viral Desai to document and assess the result
  • No special ongoing care required — treat transplanted hair exactly like natural hair
  • A healthy diet and scalp care routine will help maintain overall hair health

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my growth seems slower than this timeline?

Every patient's biology is slightly different. Some patients are fast responders and see growth by month 3. Others are slow responders and may not see significant growth until month 5–6. Both are within the normal range. If you have concerns at any point, reach out to the clinic — we monitor every patient's progress and will advise accordingly.

Can I colour or chemically treat my hair after the transplant?

Wait at least 6 months before applying any chemical treatments to the transplanted area. After 6 months, the follicles are fully anchored and can tolerate normal hair treatments. Always do a patch test first and use gentle, sulphate-free products where possible.

Will native hair around the transplant be affected?

It is possible for some existing native hairs near the transplant zone to experience temporary shock loss in the first few weeks. This is temporary — they grow back within 3–4 months. NHDT's precise implantation minimises trauma to surrounding follicles compared to standard FUE.

Is the result truly permanent?

Yes. The transplanted follicles are taken from the permanent donor zone — the back and sides of the scalp — which are genetically programmed not to bald. Once transplanted, they retain this genetic resistance and grow permanently in their new location. No maintenance treatment is required to sustain the result.
